When chronic pain persists despite previous surgeries or treatments, patients are often left feeling trapped. At Excel Health in Aliso Viejo, we offer a transformative solution: the Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS). More than just a device, SCS is a sophisticated treatment requiring a seamless, dual-expert approach.

Our program is managed by the collaborative expertise of two distinct specialists:

  • Dr. David Wu, MD: Our Interventional Pain Management expert. Dr. Wu’s foundation, built on advanced fellowship training from UCLA and UCSF, ensures precision as he guides you through the crucial SCS trial phase. His focus on minimally invasive techniques translates directly to optimizing this trial, ensuring confidence in the solution before permanent implantation.
  • Dr. Jeffrey Roh, MD, CMO: Our Orthopedic Spine Surgeon, who provides the surgical excellence required for the final, permanent implantation.

This team approach ensures comprehensive oversight, minimizing complications and maximizing success, especially for patients with conditions like Failed Back Surgery Syndrome. SCS works by delivering mild electrical pulses to replace pain signals with a comfortable sensation, offering a real path to a restored quality of life.

We believe this advanced, life-changing technology should be accessible. The Excel Health SCS program in Aliso Viejo is proudly In-Network with Blue Shield of California and Medicare. Start your journey to lasting results today at (949) 860-1081 for a FREE initial consultation.

Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS):

Who is an ideal candidate for SCS therapy?

The best candidates are typically patients who have unresolved, chronic pain (lasting six months or more) that has not responded adequately to conservative treatments like physical therapy, injections, or even prior surgery (a condition known as Failed Back Surgery Syndrome). SCS is primarily used to address nerve-related pain in the legs, arms, and back. Our collaborative team, led by Dr. Wu and Dr. Roh, determines eligibility based on diagnostic tests, patient history, and a mandatory psychological evaluation.

What is the benefit of the SCS 'Trial Phase,' and why is it essential?

The trial phase is the most critical step and serves as a “test drive” for your pain relief. During the trial, temporary leads are placed near the spine. You go home with the external device for about a week to evaluate its effectiveness. The key benefit is zero commitment: if the trial significantly reduces your pain, you proceed to permanent implantation. If not, the leads are removed, and we explore other options. This phase ensures you experience a positive outcome before making a long-term commitment.

How does the "Dual-Expert Approach" benefit a patient receiving SCS at Excel Health?

SCS requires two distinct areas of mastery. At Excel Health, the dual-expert approach provides comprehensive oversight:

  • Dr. David Wu (Interventional): Manages the precise trial and programming of the device, using his advanced training to ensure optimal lead placement for maximum nerve coverage.

  • Dr. Jeffrey Roh (Surgical): Ensures surgical excellence during the final implantation, minimizing risk and optimizing placement for the long term.

This collaborative model reduces the chance of complications and maximizes the therapeutic success of the device, ensuring the patient is cared for by a spine expert at every stage of the process.
