When is Knee Arthroscopic Surgery Necessary?

Knee arthroscopic surgery may be advised for patients who experience:

  • Chronic knee pain unresponsive to non-surgical treatments like physical therapy, medications, or injections
  • Knee instability or frequent buckling
  • Meniscus tears or ligament injuries
  • Cartilage damage or loose bodies in the joint
  • Patellar (kneecap) problems, including dislocations
  • Inflammatory issues such as synovitis or plica syndrome

Overview of the Procedure

During knee arthroscopic surgery, general or regional anesthesia will be administered. The surgeon then makes small incisions around the knee to insert the arthroscope and specialized instruments. The arthroscope sends live images from inside the knee joint to a monitor, enabling the surgeon to inspect the joint thoroughly and guide the instruments.

Once the necessary procedures are completed, the incisions are closed with sutures or surgical tape, and the knee is bandaged. The surgeon may perform different procedures based on the specific knee issue, including:

  • Meniscus Repair or Partial Meniscectomy: Fixing or removing torn meniscus tissue
  • Ligament Reconstruction: Repairing torn ligaments such as the ACL or PCL
  • Cartilage Restoration: Techniques to repair or regenerate damaged cartilage
  • Debridement: Removing loose fragments of bone, cartilage, or inflamed tissue
  • Synovectomy: Removing inflamed synovial tissue
